As I write this, construction on the Conservatory’s Cactus and Seasonal houses is well under way outside my office window. It gives me such a great feeling to know that after years of hard work the final phase of the restoration will be finished; all because of the generosity of caring community members
By the end of October, all of the Conservatory’s deteriorating wooden support structures will have been fully updated with long-lasting aluminum extrusions. The old windows will be replaced with more efficient safety glazing, and everything will receive a brilliant coat of paint. In fact, when the project is complete the Conservatory will look exactly the same as it did before, and historically accurate!
The same floor plan and symmetrical layout; the same world-class building – just upgraded for the future. Thanks to generous support, the Conservatory will be able to retain its timeless beauty, while adding even more functionality!
In addition to plant sales, docent tours and special events, in 2015 we will offer over 30 courses, lectures, and day-camps. Our soon-to-be completed multipurpose greenhouse space will be your new classroom.
With the Friends of the Conservatory’s 2015 Course Schedule you’ll have opportunities to:
« Build your own terrarium
« Learn how to care for your cacti, tropicals and orchids year round
« Master raising houseplants from diverse climate zones
« Design and build a hypertufa birdbath
« Create holiday centerpieces and wreaths
« Learn floral painting, sketching techniques, and photography
« Send the kids to unique classes and Urban Safari Day Camps
« BUT WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
From October to December, the Conservatory will be completely closed. . . During which time contractors will replace our three entry points with outward-opening doors to comply with both fire code and ADA standards. These features will help us continue to welcome all plant lovers.
However during the two-month closure, there will be no incoming revenue from visitors. The Friends of the Conservatory will use this quiet period to prepare for our enhanced programming and advocacy, but we will need your support. Lower-than-usual attendance throughout construction and an overall decrease in donations in 2014 have resulted in a projected budget shortfall. Can we count on you to help bridge the gap?
The Conservatory is such an important part of our city, our heritage, and our legacy. I want to ensure our organization remains strong as advocates and educators.
Can you help us reach our summer fundraising goal by making a tax-deductible gift to the FOC?
« IN THANKS FOR YOUR GENEROSITY
We are thrilled to host our Grand Re-Opening Gala. This catered, formal celebration will be our first chance to showcase the improved Conservatory and Multipurpose Space and to personally thank you for your support and contribution. We are looking forward to spending time with you as we toast to the future of Volunteer Park Conservatory!
All my best,
Friends of the Conservatory
P.S. Save the Date! We’re busily planning our Grand Reopening Gala for Saturday December 6 2014. We’re excited and can’t wait to share it with you!
