"Positive Plants" Embroidery Workshop with Melissa Galbraith

Calling all Crafters!

The Friends of the Conservatory is delighted to host Melissa Galbraith of MCreativeJ for this embroidery workshop. Melissa's amazing kits are featured in our Palm House Gift Shop, so we wanted to introduce our community to this amazing botanical fiber artist and maker. We are sew excited to host a hands-on experience of crafty togetherness!

In this class you’ll use hand-dyed indigo fabric and choose from four phrases (You are loved, You are magic, You are enough, or You belong here) or create your own to stitch among leaf embellishments.

Melissa will share how to prep your hoop, transfer your pattern, and use the back stitch, stem stitch, and lazy daisy stitch to create your own positive plant design.

All materials for class are included:

  • 4” beechwood embroidery hoop,

  • Indigo-dyed cotton fabric,

  • full skeins of DMC embroidery thread, embroidery needle,

  • 4 pattern options, transfer paper, felt,

  • sawtooth hook for wall mounting, and

  • printed instructions.

About the Instructor

Melissa Galbraith is the fiber artist behind MCreativeJ. She was born and raised in the desert of Washington state where her mother instilled a love of making things by hand at an early age. Melissa shares her love of nature through whimsical and modern hand embroidery kits, patterns, workshops, and her forthcoming embroidery book.

Melissa was reintroduced to hand embroidery after finding her desk job monotonous and needing a creative outlet. She loves that embroidery is like coloring with a needle and thread. Melissa found that many craft enthusiasts also wanted to learn how to embroider but were daunted by where to start. Thanks to this and a love of teaching, Melissa began to share her hand embroidery knowledge.

Melissa's embroidery kits, patterns, workshops, and book make it easy to learn a new craft for makers of all skill levels. She enjoys seeing makers fall in love with the needle arts, especially that magical ah-ha moment of learning something new.

Melissa is a member of JOIN Design and the Society for Embroidered Work. Her work has been recognized by the Woodlawn Needlework Exhibition. Melissa's work has been featured in various publications both print and online.
